Artist Statement

Thy Hoang is a queer Vietnamese American woman whose family was displaced by war and colonization, leading her environment to shape her sense of self in quiet, lasting ways. The gnawing discomfort she felt when realizing that home is not necessarily unconditional or permanent has driven her to seek belonging in her community, culture, body, and art.

Hoang’s paintings allow her to explore liminal spaces of isolation and identity. The atmospheric scenes utilize contemporary realism with expressive brushstrokes to reveal an emotional depth. She depicts current Asian American narratives while allowing for glimpses of past memories from her youth to peek through. She presents her reality of an ongoing cultural antinomy she seldom sees represented. A saturated palette employs a dissonance between incongruent emotions and intimacy. A combination of vibrant colors for her childhood and bittersweet epiphanies of adulthood portrays the emotional contradictions that define her experiences.
